Letters of Support for Telegraph Field

To Whom it May Concern,

I am writing you today on behalf of Telegraph Field enthusiasts as well "The Eradicators". "The Eradicators" is a co-ed soccer team that was created in 2006 by a group of people who not only loved the game of soccer, but also wanted to explore the city of San Francisco and make new friends. The original team was made up of a group of recent college grads new to the city; most of the lines of connections have long been forgotten, but ranging from old high school buddies, college buddies, colleagues, friends of friends, siblings of friends and basically anybody who had a slight interest t owards playing soccer and perhaps a beer afterward. We started out playing Sunday evenings, with people BARTing/driving from all over the bay area, as far away as Livermore and a few months later we started a team on Wednesday nights as well. In the years that have passed, we've played in every single season, through rain and fog. We've had people move away from the city and come back, we've had team member get married to each other, countless happy hours, world cup watching parties and most importantly victories a plenty.

I am writing to you today so you know how appreciated the San Francisco Soccer league is to your residents of this fine city. If the Pier is needed for America's Cup,

I'm Ok with that, I just request that you can assist the league organizers with finding

a suitable spot for relocation. Pier 27 is the only soccer field in the city that is accessible by many bus lines, easy walking distance from BART and close to where many of us work(Financial District) for those early weekday games.

We've been playing for the past 5 years and would like to continue playing for

at least the next 5 years as well. We have many championships ahead of us and

many new friends to make. We need this, please let me know if there is anything further

I can do to help find a replacement field.

I read this morning's Chronicle front-page article on the demolition of Telegraph Field

("Pier 27 Tenants Move Out for The Americas Cup"), in District 3.

In the case of the non-profit organization who run Telegraph Field,

San Francisco Soccer, they're being moved out for the Americas Cup

without being re-housed.
It's incredibly disappointing that accommodations have been made for the private

companies being moved, but not the sole non-profit organization that brings together

San Francisco's communities for health and recreation. That speaks volumes about

the priorities of City Hall and the San Francisco Board of Supervisors.
I have played soccer at Telegraph Field every Sunday morning since moving to

San Francisco two years ago. I've made good friends and met people from disparate

SF neighborhoods that I would never have otherwise never come into contact with.

The teams that play in the League bring together Latinos, white Americans, Asian

Americans, African Americans, and European immigrants of a wide variety of ages

and socio-economic backgrounds. It breaks down cultural barriers and promotes

healthier living.
I understand that the Americas Cup is projected to bring the city much-needed dollars.

I'm not opposed to the accommodating that. But "accommodation" also has to made

for ALL of those affected, and not just the four-month boat festival and private companies.

I urge you to reconsider your priorities for accommodating the organizations

impacted by the Americas Cup, and find a new home for San Francisco Soccer

and Telegraph Field.

a new location for the field. Telegraph field was one of the greatest things about

San Francisco. To be able to play on the embarcadero, in the shadow's of Coit Tower

and the downtown skyline was really amazing. Please help our community

To the city and port authority,
Removing the soccer field at Pier 27 would be a huge loss to the city.
It's incredibly important to the local community on many fronts:
New transplants:
When I first moved here - this was one of the first places I went to
get acclimated to the city and to meet new people/friends. For many
new people to the city (like me) - simple soccer fields like this one
are the first places that people seek out to find comfort and
normalcy.
Connecting the SF Community/Mixing Cultures:
Pier 27 is a melting pot of ethnicities and a place where all of these
cultures come together to enjoy a common passion. On a regular
Saturday - you have pretty much every continent covered and playing on
the same teams. All in fun, all in enjoying a great team. Beyond that
- this field connects all the neighborhoods of the city and beyond.
Ultimately - connecting people who would never really talk or meet had
it not been for a scheduled league game.
Recreation:
The surrounding Bay Area is a tremendously active, stressed, busy,
corporate region. With a huge amount of overworked community who
absolutely need outlets to get some much needed exercise, recreation,
fun, etc. Pier 27 is that outlet for many folks. So losing another
place in this already compressed/compact city - is definitely not
healthy for it's residents.
That's what soccer and this field provides to this city - much more
than a place where people kick a ball around. I can understand the
America's Cup will bring huge dollars to this city. But it's very
important to consider the impact this will have on the city. I think
this would be a big mistake to remove this field completely - for a
2-3 week event.
If the wheels are already in motion and there is no stopping it -
please strongly consider relocating the field near by on the
waterfront, in equal or better field conditions, ample parking, easily
accessible by all (foot, bike, munitransit, car), centrally located on
the waterfront and without being closed for more than a month or two.
Ultimately that's what Pier 27 provides to it's players. So a new
home would need to deliver what the current one does - if not more.

I am writing to express my support for the future of Telegraph field. I am the

Director of Athletics at Stuart Hall for boys. My athletic program (5th through to 8th graders)

have used this field for the last 6 years, and it has proven to be a valuable resource, and a

great fun and safe area for the kids to practice.

Prior to using this space many of our practices were held on very poorly kept grass fields

in the city where rain outs due to wet conditions happened often. This has not been the

case the past 6 years due to using telegraph field. As I am sure you are aware, P and R city grass and turf athletic fields are are already overloaded. Removing yet another space that is integral to youth sports would be a massive blow to both my program

(and boys and girls playing soccer city wide), and would place even more

pressure on the Park and Rec spaces.

I hope that this wonderful youth sports resource can be relocated and can

continue help to develop young athletes passion for soccer in the years to come.

over two years on our company soccer team, The Accelerators, and would

appreciate your help to ensure that Telegraph Field gets moved to a new

location nearby so we can continue to play. I know I’m not alone when I

say that playing soccer at Telegraph Field is one of the highlights of my week,

in addition to being a great stress reliever : ) Soccer Tots also uses this field

and it would be very sad for those little kids to lose their “soccer home”.

Many players speak favorably of the field, saying it's the perfect size, and in a

great location on the Embarcadero. It's by far the nearest field

to my home as well.

My name is Joselyn Staley and I am one of the Program Directors at The Salesian Boys' & Girls' Club. Our organization is located in North Beach an area where there is no Soccer Field. Our organization has been serving the youth for at least 90 years.

John Flood has been very kind in letting our girls and boys practice for their soccer games at Pier 27. We have been practicing there for at least 5 years. Before that we had to practice in our parking lot which is concrete. As you know it is very difficult to practice on concrete.

We would like to continue to practice at the soccer field so our children can continue to improve their skills and remain healthy. I'm sure you will agree that is imperative that we support any organization that promotes healthy "active" children.

Please take this into consideration when you decide the future of Pier 27 and any other organization that provides services to insure that our children of the future continue active and healthy lives.

I have signed a team up for the upcoming soccer league at Telegraph Field, and am

saddened by the news this morning that the field will be demolished soon. Telegraph

field is the only place I know of near the financial district where adults can play sports,

and that should be an important asset for the city. The weak SF public transportation

system makes it impossible to get to golden gate park from our office in the Financial

District in a timely fashion, so this is really my company's only chance to participate in

a sports league. I urge you you to do what is in your power to help keep the

San Francisco Soccer organization nearby!

4 years ago. I've played every Monday and Thursday in that 4 years, and it's a major reason why

I've remained living here in San Francisco, since I've met most of my friends through this league

and it's the only place I've found enough teammates to fill a whole team regularly.

We often go out to dinner and grab drinks at local restaurants and bars, so I see Telegraph Field

as serving more than one purpose to a neighborhood.

My name is Matthew and I have lived in San Francisco for the past six years, and feel

I can now call this city home. I have played in the soccer leagues on Telegraph Field for

the past four years; it is the only location within the area to play the game I have enjoyed

my entire life. I understand the benefits of hosting the America's Cup in SF, as well as the

growth that Larry Ellison's 66 year lease of the waterfront property will stimulate in the city

I am sad to see the field go, but support the incoming tenants.

I only ask that you strongly consider a relocation of the field rather than an eviction.

Having so many different cultures in SF, as well as soccer being the international game,

it would be a shame to not support the soccer-playing community, as well as the youth

Soccer at Telegraph Field is more than just a game for me. It is a place where

convenient access to an outdoor facility on the north side of the city...

and area where type of space is VERY hard to come by.

I would like to encourage you to support San Francisco Soccer and their bid to work with the port to find a new location for Telegraph Field.

San Francisco does not have enough space in general for team sports like soccer. I play on fields all over the city, and they are crowded, expensive, heavily utilized, and require a lot of travel to access.

Removing this field removes players and the activity from existence. They can't just go somewhere else.

Telegraph field was another location that offered a wide range of teams in a dense area a chance to participate in team sport. How many businesses in the area have employee teams that bond there? How many urban children are given another opportunity to experience serious exercise in an activity they can enjoy for 40+ years?

We are shrinking a valuable experience and opportunity.

Please lend your support to San Francisco Soccer.

I know that with the America's Cup, the current field location will likely need to change, but it should not be removed completely. I played in the corporate league, and the field's location was perfect to access from the financial district. The field provides many opportunities to play, from corporate leagues, men's leagues, co-ed leagues, and children's leagues. It brings many people together, and is in a safe, convenient area.

As I am sure that you are aware, the Telegraph Field on the Embarcadero will soon be closing (at least in its current state) on account of the America's Cup. I play and have been playing soccer at Telegraph Field almost every Friday night for the past two years, and I have met some of my very best friends because of it. Please help save Telegraph Field. It is a community focus of health and team-building that has personally touched me and my family and many others living in this city. For the past three years I have been playing soccer there on Friday nights, and my 3-year-old son has enjoyed weekend lessons and group play through their Soccer Tots program on Saturdays and Sundays.

At Telegraph Field, I have made deep lifelong friendships and feel am part of a community of soccer lovers in San Francisco who have a passion for the sport and a personal tie to that special field.

Telegraph Field is a San Francisco landmark. It would be a shame to lose the beautiful physical space as well as all that it represents for its expansive community and this city.

Please do what you can to allow the soccer legacy of San Francisco to persevere by saving Telegraph Field.

I moved to the city about a year ago and have become a regular soccer player at the telegraph hill field. The presence of this field and the excellent way in which it has run have allowed me to build up a collection of great friends and create a social life for myself in a new city. In addition as an Asthmatic playing soccer has helped me get this condition under control. To be quite frank the presence of the pitch and the SF Soccer team have helped me make a a great start in a new city and I would like to make sure that that opportunity stays open for anyone else.
Please try to keep the telegraph hill field open or find a replacement field to keep the organization going.

I am a long-time San Francisco resident, and work as a commercial litigator for a law firm in the Financial District. I write to express my support for the soccer pitch at Telegraph Field, and to encourage you to make best efforts to ensure that they are provided with an alternate facility by the Port of San Francisco.

The field is a great addition to the area. The field is used throughout the week and on weekends for youth soccer leagues and practices, and for local small-group adult leagues -- what the English call "pub leagues." I have been playing in the Tuesday and Thursday pickup lunch games for the past several years, riding my bike from my office down to the field, and then showering at the Embarcadero YMCA. The field is fantastic, and soccer brings together a greap mixed group of young and old, working class and professional, locals and foreigners. It would be a shame for it to killed in order to make way for the America's Cup, which, to put it fairly, is a great way for the ultra-rich to burn money, but does not provide much to engage average joes.

Please help Telegraph Field in their efforts to obtain a new facility. A soccer pitch is only about the size of a tennis court, but provides a space for exercise for many more people. I expect there is room somewhere for another year or two of soccer in downtown San Francisco.

Having a resource such as Telegraph Field being located in the heart of San Francisco is one of the best ways I have found to bring together people of all different backgrounds. Despite different jobs, living situations, educational backgrounds etc., we all come together to enjoy a sport we love. Every week I look forward to heading over for my night of soccer. And if a new field is not found unfortunately finding another place to play may prove to be very difficult because like many many people in the city I rely on public transportation and my bike to get me around.
In summary, please recognize the impact that this one little field has had on countless people and provide whatever support you can to finding a replacement.

Saw in the Chronicle that the soccer field on the pier is getting torn down.
It would be nice if the city could come up with a reasonable plan to support residents and workers in the city that like to play soccer.
My company has had a great time playing soccer of Telegraph field. The ability to play in a league really contributed to my understanding and enjoyment of the game.
As the US starts to catch up to the rest of the world as soccer fans, support for the sport enhances the city's milieu as a world wide tourist destination.

When I moved to SF it took me about 2 years to find a good running soccer league and over the 3 years playing there, I have met a ton of interesting people and I've gotten to know the reliable and super friendly staff pretty well.
It is amazing who a simple thing like kicking a ball can bring such a large community together and it would be a shame if the organization would not be able to continue their great work and bring us soccer players together.

There aren't many options close to my home, or even all of SF, especially a turf field with such quality, which is safer than playing on grass because of holes etc...Also the leagues are very well organized and enjoyable. I haven't found any place better in the Bay Area than Telegraph field to meet new people, make friends and play soccer.

I'm writing because every Friday night, I play soccer on Telegraph Field on Pier 27. I know that with the America's Cup coming, there are plans to tear down the field and put a village in its stead, so that visitors and locals can watch the Cup.
As good as the America's Cup will be for the city, I do not want to lose our soccer field for it. Soccer is a big part of my San Francisco lifestyle, and as a taxpaying citizen, I would like the city to ensure that we get a new field somewhere nearby.
I understand that you've spoken with some good family friends of mine, who were large supporters in your campaign, and assured them months ago that Telegraph Field was going to be relocated. They happily passed on the news to me, and I informed all my Friday night soccer friends of it.
Please make sure that Telegraph Field does get relocated, preferably near its original location. It's the only soccer field in the city that I can walk to - and that I feel safe walking to, and I will be deeply saddened to see it go.

No other institution exemplifies those three things better than Telegraph Field. Through my time with The Lumberjacks, a coed team playing in the Wednesday night league for five consecutive seasons, I've really been able to engage with my community. I'm a 29 year old woman; I work as a software developer at ModCloth.com, I live in SOMA; I recycle and compost and generally try to be a good San Francisco resident. I therefore am at a loss to understand why my city would tear down Telegraph Field, the place I play soccer every Friday night. The purported reason, to make room for America's Cup spectators, seems short-sighted and destructive. This year the America's Cup is called the Louis Vuitton Cup. The Louis Vuitton cup, an isolated, one-time event for tourists, is displacing the soccer league I've played in for four seasons, where children and adults both play soccer throughout the week, and have for years.

The city's decision to destroy a soccer field widely used by many area residents offends me as a San Francisco voter and a campaign contributor. Soccer leagues, like all community spaces, contribute to the long-term vitality of our community. With the decision, the city is purposefully uprooting us to make room for an event catering to tourists who will visit once. Will the restaurants and businesses that we visit after every soccer game get more from the America's cup than they will from our continued support week after week? I understand the need for new development but this project is the opposite of sustainable community development, and I urge you to reconsider this decision.

It is a tragedy to displace such a popular and successful soccer community which serves not only budding young soccer players but provides community to the businesses in the area who have corporate teams, which I have been a captain of for 4 years. The statement in the article in the SF Chronicle today: The moves have been in the works for months, Mayor Ed Lee said Monday. "They've all been notified about this issue," he said. "It shouldn't be a surprise to anybody" exemplifies the arrogance of our city government and its officials and the lack of respect for and support of its own community. Businesses and individuals who sponsor teams with San Francisco Soccer are sadden to know that we may not be able to continue to play soccer if a replacement field is not made available within the same area and to know that our city officials are not genuinely concerned about displacing an organization that supports a diverse social community such as soccer . . . this is “not a surprise” and, yes, we’ve all been “notified about this issue” and have been waiting and hoping for months that we will have a soccer field. So, Mr. Chiu, what will you do?

Players of all ages, genders and races enjoy playing on Telegraph Field and it is going to be very disappointing having to move from such a great venue. I work just down the street from the current location of Telegraph Field, which has provided me with a great venue to get out and enjoy some nice weather while taking an afternoon break over the last year. Between the commercial activity in the FiDi and tourist venues by the Wharf, there's really not a lot of green space in this part of town. Luckily, Telegraph Field carved out a little spot where I and many other local soccer enthusiasts can meetup for our favorite outdoor activity. I've played in multiple nightly leagues, as well as pickup games every Tuesday and Thursday with 20-30 new friends, and this field (despite its unique parking lot location) has become an important part of my life in the city.

Unlike the areas near Marina Green, Dolores park, Golden Gate park, or many other neighborhoods of San Francisco, we don't have any large tracts of land set aside for parks and recreation. Obviously, I don't expect sprawling parks like those in the East Bay or Peninsula, but I believe that local residents and employees would make good use of any such space we could claim. My company, [redacted], places great importance on physical well-being and I can assure you that we'd love to have some open space nearby for impromptu games of soccer, football, frisbee, etc.

Although Telegraph Field isn't technically a grassy outdoor park, it's the closest thing we have in this concrete jungle. I'm sad that it will probably see its last few games over the coming weeks, with no future destination determined. While I understand the possible financial benefits of this new development, it's frustrating that many small businesses in the area are getting the boot essentially so a handful of millionaires have a new place to play with their toys, while the rest of us are left with nothing but uncertainty.

I sincerely hope that the new projects inject life and capital into the Historic Waterfront neighborhood and San Francisco, but I will forever hold a negative opinion of the project and its leaders if you don't work to find a middle ground with the existing entities. Whether we annex some extra area to an existing park (e.g. Sue Bierman park/Herman plaza and properties around Washington/Drumm Sts.) or simply relocate Telegraph Field to a similar tract of land on a nearby pier or warehouse, I'd like to continue having a local place to enjoy an active, healthy lifestyle.

Being on the team has helped me make friends when I knew no-one in this city. It is a very special place for a lot of people- not to mention encourages a healthy living style :)
